Durham Graphene Science Ltd (DGS) is an R&D company based in the North East of England.

DGS is an R&D company that specialises in the synthesis of Graphene. The company uses a unique and scalable 'bottom-up' approach to prepare Graphene that is protected by a patent application. The company was founded by Dr. Karl Coleman (Durham University) who has over 12 years experience working in the field of nanocarbons where he has published extensively.


 What is Graphene?
 
Diamond and graphite are common forms of carbon but more recently this family has been extended with newly discovered nanocarbons such as Buckminsterfullerenes, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and, the most recent addition, Graphene. Graphene has a molecular structure made up of one single layer of carbon atoms in a “chicken wire” formation, and is a single layer of graphite. It is of significant research interest as it out-performs other nanocarbons and possesses a range of exceptional and potentially beneficial properties such as high strength-to-weight ratio and high electrical and thermal conductivity.
 
What can Graphene be used for?
 
Owing to the exceptional properties of graphene it could see application in new generation electronic components, energy-storage materials such as capacitors and batteries, optically transparent thin films, conductive inks and most importantly advanced polymer nanocomposites where it has the potential to replace carbon fibre. The biggest problem facing graphene is the availability of the material and more broadly, unlike their carbon nanotube cousins, the lack of chemical methodology to synthesise the material on any reasonable scale. It is this problem that DGS solves with its unique production process.
